The Food Safety Department plays an effective role in implementing the health policy in all food safety-related matters and carries out the powers entrusted to the Ministry of Public Health under Law No. 8 of 1990 regarding regulating the human food control. The Department conducts food control and inspection, in places where food is being handled and food traders to ensure its safety and validity. It also prohibits handling any food that does not meet the specifications and requirements in cooperation with competent authorities. In addition, it responds to emergency cases related to food safety and validity in partnership with more than one entity, manages and operates laboratories to examine and analyze food samples.

Food Handlers exams 

The aim of the exams is to improve the food safety awareness level among the different Food Handlers categories.

The Food Handlers exams include multiple choice questions related to the Food Safety requirements. Please see below an overview of the available exams and how they relate to the Food Handler activities/job roles.

Food Handler assigned to monitor:

  • The receiving of different food products as well as their proper and safe storage.
  • The good functioning of cold units.
  • The cleaning of storage sections (dry-chilled and frozen).
  • The stock rotation and inventory.

Cleaner (chef steward)

Food Handler assigned to:

  • Maintain the cleanliness of the food establishment.
  • Follow cleaning plan (routine and deep) and fill the cleaning log sheet.
  • If he/she is chef steward, he/she will supervise and train the cleaners and prepare the working schedule as well.

Cook (commis de

Food Handler assigned to:

  • Prepare and handle food during all food chain steps as per the guidance of his supervisor.
  • Supervise the cook (good hygiene practices as well as the quality of processing).
  • Handle food when needed.

Multidisciplinary Food handler (cafeteria- street vendor- or any food establishment with total number of food handler 10 or less)

Food Handler assigned to:

  • Practice many tasks like receiving -storage-food handling and preparation - cleaning work surfaces and even the whole food establishment at the end of the shift.

The person in charge:

  • To supervise the compliance with food safety requirements in the food establishment.
  • To guide and give training for the Food Handlers
  • To deal with MOPH regarding any food safety related issue.

Important Information

  • Companies and Food Handlers must register in WATHEQ System of MOPH Qatar before scheduling a testing appointment.
  • It is the responsibility of Companies and Food Handlers to provide the correct information when scheduling a testing appointment and to select the correct exam based on the Food Handler activity/job role.
  • Please note that the Company email address must be provided to schedule a testing appointment.  
  • Once current/prospect employees have successfully completed the Food Handler exam related to their specialty/job role, Companies must obtain the MOPH Food Handler license from the Chamber of Commerce in Qatar after paying the applicable fees. Please note that the license will not be issued if the candidate is not in possession of a Qatar ID.
